No. 2 - Cost Estimate £16.5m
The Highways Agency required an accurate cost estimate for a proposed river bridge replacement scheme in the north east of England.
On this occasion our client was the managing agent contractor and design work was still continuing.
We mobilised a team consisting of estimators, planners, engineers and quantity surveyors with a looming deadline for delivery. Our task was to take off complex and changing steelwork concrete and piling quantities from our client’s drawings and set about preparing an estimate as if we were one of the bidding contractors.
We investigated the historic causes and likely trends of steel price increases and took a view on prevailing economic conditions which would affect the final price.
Our remit was wide – we assessed the nature and cost of temporary works for both the piecemeal demolition of the old bridge and the construction work required on the new structure.
We provided estimates for traffic management and even the cost of running a free temporary shuttle bus service carrying pedestrians over the old bridge whilst construction work was under way.
We incorporated design changes including the usual last minute ones and delivered on time to an agreed budget.
